Persons in Chinese History - Zhi Buyi 直不疑

Zhi Buyi 直不疑 (died 138 BCE) was a high official of the early Former Han period 前漢 (206 BCE-8 CE). He came from Nanyang 南陽 (modern Nanyang, Henan) and was a court gentleman (lang 郎) under Emperor Wen 漢文帝 (r. 180-157 BCE). Later on he was promoted to Grand Master of the palace (zhong dafu 中大夫). Emperor Jing 漢景帝 (r. 157-141 BCE) made him Chamberlain for the palace garrison (weiwei 衛尉). Zhi Buyi took part as a General of the vanguard (qian jiangjun 前將軍) in the suppression of the rebellion of the Seven Princes. In 143 he was made Censor-in-chief (yushi dafu 御史大夫) and was enfeoffed as Marquis of Sai 塞侯. On the accession of Emperor Wu 漢武帝 (r. 141-87) to the throne, he resigned. His posthumous title is Marquis Xin 信侯.
Zhi Buyi was interested in Daoist teachings and took over Daoist thoughts into his administration. He never easily changed established routines and adhered to an administrative style of non-activity (wuwei 無為).
