Feng Hou 風后

Sep 9, 2012 © Ulrich Theobald

Feng Hou 風后, the "Lord of the Winds", was according to legend a minister of the Yellow Emperor 黃帝. The book Yishi 繹史 even calls Feng Hou his counsellor-in-chief (xiang 相).

The Song period 宋 (960-1279) encyclopaedia Taiping yulan 太平御覽 quotes from the (now lost) book Zhilin 志林, where it is said that when the Yellow Emperor waged war against Chi You 蚩尤, the latter produced impenetrable fog that lasted for three days. Feng Hou thereupon invented the compass cart (zhinanche 指南車) to find out the direction into which the army had to march.

Authorship of the military treatise Wojijing 握奇經 is attributed to Feng Hou.
