Za guishen zhiguai 雜鬼神志怪 "Various stories of supernatural events" is a collection of stories about supernatural events written by an unknown person during the Southern and Northern dynasties period 南北朝 (300~600).
20 fragments of the book were collected by Lu Xun 魯迅 (1881-1936) in his series Gu xiaoshuo gouchen 古小說鉤沉. The fragments are quoted in the Tang-period 唐 (618-907) encyclopaedia Beitang shuchao 北堂書鈔, where they are called za guishen zhiguai "miscellaneous stories of ghosts and spirits", which is actually not the title of a book. Lu Xun's collection also includes fragments dubbed zhiguai 志怪 and za guishen zhi 雜鬼怪志 from the Yuzhu baodian 玉燭寶典, and fragments called za guishen zhi, zhiguai 志怪, zhiguai ji 志怪集, and Xushi zhiguai 許氏志怪 from the Song-period 宋 (960-1279) encyclopaedia Taiping yulan 太平御覽.
Examples from the collection are the stories of the monk Yao (Shamen Seng Yao 沙門僧瑤), Shi Jilun mourning his mother (Shi Jilun sang mu 石季倫喪母, Xiahou Hong encountering a ghost (Xiahou Hong jian gui 夏侯弘見鬼), and Yuan Yuanji exorcising a female ghost (Yuan Yuanji zhu nügui 袁元忌逐女鬼). Some of the stories are also found in other collections. The story Qi ren niang jiu 齊人釀酒 "People from Qi brew wine" resembles the story Qianri jiu 千日酒 "Thousand days for wine" in the collection Bowuzhi 博物志; the story Huimo 灰墨 "Ashes and ink" is also found in the books Soushenji 搜神記, Caoshi zhiguai 曹氏志怪, and Youminglu 幽明錄; and Zhouyinshi 周尹氏 "Master Yin of Zhou" is also quoted in the Luyizhuan 錄異傳.
