Gujin shanyan 古今善言 "Good words of old and new" was a treatise written during the Southern Dynasties period 南朝 (420-589) by Fan Tai 范泰 (d. 428), courtesy name Bolun 伯倫, from Shunyang 順陽 (in today’s Hebei province). He first served the Jin dynasty 晉 (265-420) as an erudite in the National University (taixue boshi 太學博士), but the Liu-Song dynasty 劉宋 (420-479) appointed him Grand Master of the Palace with Golden Seal and Purple Ribbon (jinzi guanglu dafu 金紫光祿大夫), In 426, he was made palace attendant (shizhong 侍中), and then Director of the Directorate of Education (guozi jijiu 國子祭酒).

His book Gujin shanyan with a size of 24 juan was famous and widespread. The bibliographical chapters in the Suishu 隋書, Xintangshu 新唐書, and Songshi 宋史 indicate a size of 30 juan. Everything is lost except one quotation found in Li Daoyuan's 酈道元 (466 or 472-527) hydrological book Shuijing zhu 水經注. It is included in Ma Guohan's 馬國翰 (1794-1857) series of lost texts, Yuhan shanfang jiyi shu 玉函山房輯佚書.
