Yuhu yeshi 玉壺野史 "Unofficial histories from the jade mug", also called Yuhu qinghua 玉壺清話 "Pure talks of the jade mug", is a "brush-notes"-style book (biji 筆記) written during the Song period 宋 (960-1279) by the Buddhist monk Wenying 文瑩 (mid-11th cent.). "Jade Mug" was the name of his study.
The 10-juan-long Yuhu yeshi was compiled after the publication of Wenying's book Xiangshan yelu 湘山野錄, probably during the Yuanfeng reign-period 元豐 (1078-1085). The bibliographical chapter in the Wenxian tongkao 文獻通考 lists the book with the title Yuhu qinghua, with a length of 10 juan. Cao Rong's 曹溶 series Xuehai leibian 學海類編 calls it Yuhu shihua 玉壺詩話.
It includes quotations from numerous historiographical sources from the beginning of the Song period to the Xining reign-era 熙寧 (1068-1077). It refers to inscriptions along "soul paths" (shendao 神道) leading to graves, tomb inscriptions (muzhi 墓志), conduct descriptions (xingzhuang 行狀), veritable records (shilu 實錄) and memorials to the throne (zouyi 奏議), as well as from poems and other private prose literature. During the compilation process, Wenying combed through writings from many decades, numbering several thousand juan, and selected useful stories. Wenying thus formed a work of his own standing, one that complements and corresponds with other books of the type of "wild (i.e., unofficial) history" (yelu 野錄, yeshi 野史).
The Yuhu yeshi is to be found in the series Siku quanshu 四庫全書, Mohai jinhu 墨海金壺, Shoushange congshu 守山閣叢書, Zhibuzuzhai congshu 知不是齋叢書, Biji xiaoshuo daguan 筆記小說大觀, Shuofu 說郛 and Wuchao xiaoshuo 五朝小說. In 1984, the Zhonghua Shuju Press 中華書局 published a modern edition in a joint version with the Xiangshan yelu, with annotations by Zheng Changgang 鄭長剛 and Yang Liyang 楊立揚.
