Sichuan tongzhi 四川通志

The Four Categories of Literature
Sichuan tongzhi 四川通志 is the official local gazetteer of the province of Sichuan. There are two different editions, one dating from the Yongzheng reign 雍正 (1723-1735) of the Qing period 清 (1644-1911), the Yongzheng Sichuan tongzhi 雍正四川通志 and one from the Jiaqing reign 嘉慶 (1796-1820), the Jiaqing Sichuan tongzhi 嘉慶四川通志.
The Yongzheng edition was compiled by Huang Tinggui 黄廷桂 (1691-1759) who was for some time governor-general (zongdu 總督) of Sichuan. The 47 juan "scrolls" long gazetteer was finished and printed in 1733. It is rated a very clear and well-structured and greatly enhanced the content of earlier gazetteers of the province. The chapters on the field tax (tianfu 田賦), border defence (bianfang 邊防) and the native chieftains (tusi 土司) are of great importance and were in their clearness a model for later compilations. Unfortunately the Yongzheng edition also copied errors and inappropriate structure in some chapters from earlier version without amending them. A slightly enlarged version was printed in 1736. This version is included in the imperial reprint series Siku quanshu 四庫全書.
The Jiaqing edition was compiled by the Manchu official Cangde 常明, who was also governor-general of Sichuan, and revised by the writer Yang Fangcan 楊芳燦. It is 204 juan long, with a large introductory part of 22 juan, and was finished and printed in 1816. It divided into twelve chapters. The chapter Xiyu zhi 西域志 "Western regions" includes information on astronomy, geography, peoples and literature from the newly occupied territories of the native Tibetan tribes in western Sichuan. It is very important for the history of eastern Tibet.
