Gongduan yingzao lu 工段營造錄 "Sections of construction projects" is a text on construction work written during the high Qing period 清 (1644-1911) by Li Dou 李斗 (1749-1817), courtesy name Beiyou 北有, style Aitang 艾塘, from Yizheng 儀徵, Jiangsu. The text is actually chapter 17 of the book Yangzhou huafang lu 揚州畫舫錄.
The book of 1 juan describes Yangzhou's urban planning, changes in the canal system, architectural and garden sites, as well as cultural relics, crafts, and local customs. It preserves literary materials such as verses and operatic works. The content is abundant and wide-ranging. Among these, discussions of architectural techniques and aesthetics form an important part.
The text demonstrates the construction techniques and institutional systems of Qing-style architecture, including levelling (Shuiping 水平), earthwork (Tuzuo 土作), timberwork (Damu zuo 大木作), standards for material cutting (Zheliao faze 折料法則), the setting of brackets (Douke 斗科), construction procedures and division of labour (Shi gongcheng xu ji fengong 施工程序及分工), relative measures of timber pieces (Mucai bizhong 木材比重), scaffolding work (Dacai zuo 搭材作), tiling work (Wazuo 瓦作), brickwork (Zhuanzuo 磚作), glazed-tile materials (Liuli waliao 琉璃瓦料), stonework (Shizuo 石作), eave-tip upturning (Guojia fa 裹角法), roofs (Ding 頂), and finishing work (Zhuangxiu zuo 裝修作).
It then provides brief descriptions of the methods and regulations for bridges, carved beams and painted rafters, glazed-tile screen walls, wooden ceilings, bronze and ironwork, painting and lacquering, pictorial decoration, mounting, interior furnishings and ornamentation, planting of flowers and trees, and the terminology related to palace and residential structures. An appendix (Yangzhou huafang lu ji yingzao zhi jishu 揚州畫舫錄及營造之紀述) records specific construction methods for Buddhist architecture, as well as regulations on the building of temples, gardens, and sculptural works.
The material recorded in the book is highly practical and maintains a fairly rich body of Qing-period architectural standards and ideas; however, in the compiled sections, the organisation is sometimes somewhat unclear.
In 1931, the Zhongguo Yingzao Xueshe 中國營造學社 published a critical modern edition, which was republished as a facsimile in 1984 by the Shanghai Kexue Jishu Press 上海科學技術出版社.
